Full detail is in our Apple TV 4K review and Google TV Streamer 4K review.
Speed and Interface
The Apple TV 4K is faster, booting in ~18 seconds and navigating almost instantly thanks to its A15 chip, versus ~24 seconds for the Google TV Streamer. Its tvOS interface is the cleanest and most ad-light in the mainstream. The Google TV Streamer is smooth and pleasant too, and its content-first interface with a unified watchlist is genuinely useful — but it still surfaces recommendations, where Apple stays cleaner.
Ecosystem and Smart Home
Your existing ecosystem matters. The Apple TV integrates tightly with iPhones, HomePods and Apple services, and acts as a HomeKit hub. The Google TV Streamer suits Android/Google users, ties into Google Assistant, and is a broader Matter and Thread smart-home hub, making it the more flexible standards-based hub. Both use their maker’s app store — in practice, app coverage is excellent on each.
Privacy, Picture and VPN
On privacy, the Apple TV 4K leads — less data collection and no tracking-based ads, while the Google TV Streamer ties into Google’s ecosystem. On picture and sound, they are evenly matched: both do reference 4K HDR with Dolby Vision and Atmos, and the Apple TV adds iPhone colour calibration.
Both run VPN apps. The Google TV Streamer’s standard built-in Ethernet is a value advantage for a steady wired connection, where the Apple TV reserves Ethernet for its pricier model — see Wi-Fi vs Ethernet.
