How We Test
Every recommendation on WatchlyGuide comes from hands-on testing on European connections and accounts. This page describes the process we follow, so you can judge our conclusions — and reproduce them.
The Ground Rules
- Real use, real time. Each product becomes our main device or service for a minimum of two weeks before we score it.
- Same conditions. Products in one comparison are tested on the same TV, the same internet line and in the same period, so numbers are comparable.
- Measured, not guessed. Timings are taken with a stopwatch and averaged over multiple runs; speeds come from repeated speed tests, not single snapshots.
Streaming Devices
- Performance: cold-boot time, app-launch time and menu responsiveness — five runs each, averaged.
- Picture & sound: 4K HDR (Dolby Vision / HDR10+) and audio passthrough verified on the same reference OLED TV.
- European app coverage: we install and play Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, YouTube and national broadcaster apps (e.g. BBC iPlayer, ARD/ZDF, RaiPlay, France.tv).
- Remote & living-room experience: voice search, TV volume/power control, and how much advertising the home screen pushes.
- Updates: the manufacturer's track record for security and feature updates.
VPNs
- Speed: 9 tests per provider (3 servers × 3 times of day) on the same European fibre line, reported as % of base speed retained. See our full VPN speed test methodology for the exact line, tool and retention calculation.
- Streaming reliability: 6+ hours of playback per provider on Fire TV and Apple TV, logging every error and buffering event.
- TV apps: native app availability and usability on Fire TV, Android/Google TV and Apple TV.
- Privacy basics: jurisdiction, independent audits, and logging policy — from primary sources.
- Value: intro price and renewal price, device limits, refund windows.
Apps & Services
- Catalogue for Europe: content depth in European regions, not the US library.
- Playback quality: maximum resolution/bitrate actually delivered per device.
- Usability: profiles, downloads, subtitles and accessibility options.
- Price fairness: plan structure, ads tiers and regional pricing.
Scoring
Scores out of 5 weigh performance and reliability first, then ease of use, then price. A cheap product that works flawlessly will always outscore an expensive one that doesn't. "Best for X" badges reflect the specific reader each product suits — not a payment.
Transparency
WatchlyGuide earns affiliate commissions on some links (full disclosure here). Affiliate status has zero influence on scores, rankings or badges: test results are locked before affiliate links are added, and we keep recommending products that pay us nothing when they win our tests. If a product we recommend changes for the worse, we retest and update — every article shows its "last updated" date.
