Ad-supported tiers are the cheapest way onto Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video in Europe — several euros less per month — but they come with catches: usually no 4K, limited or no downloads, and occasionally a little missing content. Apple TV+ has no ads tier. This data guide compares the ad tiers on price, ad load and limits, with a table, and explains when they’re worth it. For full prices, see our European streaming prices guide.
Ad Tiers Compared
Typical eurozone pricing observed July 2026; prices vary by country.
| Service | Ad-tier price | Ad load (approx) | Catches |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix | from €6.99/mo | ~4–5 min/hour | 1080p max; some titles unavailable |
| Disney+ | from €5.99/mo | ~4 min/hour | 1080p max; downloads limited |
| Prime Video | With Prime (ads default) | Light | 4K still included; €2.99 to remove ads |
| Apple TV+ | No ads tier | — | Single price, no ads |
The big catch: no 4K on Netflix and Disney+ ad tiers (1080p max) — Prime is the exception since its 4K is included. Ad tiers may also limit downloads and, on some services, hide a little licensed content.
| Viewer type | Ad tier worth it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Budget viewer, casual watching | Worth it | The catalogue is essentially the same |
| Mostly HD on a smaller screen | Worth it | The cheapest legitimate way in |
| Low-cost second service | Worth it | Same content for several euros less |
| You want 4K | Not worth it | Choose Premium, Prime or Apple TV+ |
| You rely on downloads | Not worth it | Ad tiers may limit downloads |
| You want ad-free viewing | Not worth it | Apple TV+ has no ads tier; others charge more |
When an Ad Tier Is Worth It
- Worth it: budget viewers, casual watching, mostly HD on a smaller screen, or a low-cost second service. The catalogue is essentially the same.
- Not worth it: you want 4K (choose Premium, Prime or Apple TV+), rely on downloads, or an ad-free experience.
- Availability: ad tiers rolled out across most European markets, but check your country guide and pricing.
The Bottom Line
Ad-supported tiers are the cheapest legitimate way onto Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video, with essentially the same content for several euros less. The trade-offs are ads, usually no 4K, and sometimes limited downloads — Prime’s included 4K is the exception, and Apple TV+ has no ads tier. Great for HD, budget or second-service use; upgrade for 4K or downloads.
